Every freedom request is a coin flip: clamp down and they resist, let go too fast and you're awake at midnight. Most parents swing between the two and their teen reads it as arbitrary. The Ladder replaces the guess with five visible levels, so the answer stops being your mood on the night and becomes something your teen can see, predict, and climb. "You're not ready" turns into "here's exactly how you get there."
So their judgement holds up when you're not in the room.
Rules only work while you're watching, and you're watching less every year. The point of coaching a decision instead of making it is that the reasoning stays with them - what they were actually choosing between, which value it touched, whether they'd stand behind it tomorrow. You're not trying to win the party question. You're trying to make the next fifty decisions ones you don't have to be present for.
So you're still the person they call at 25.
